8 April 2026: César Manrique Cabrera, by Dr. Angela Chantry
César Manrique (1919 - 1992) was an inspirational Spanish artist, architect and sculptor best known for his architectural projects.
The roots of his abstract and pictorial production lie in Lanzarote's volcanic landscape where he transformed the environment into a non-realist naturalism. He is described as the man “building paradise in the ruins of hell”. He was part of Spain's contemporary "informalist" movement and one of the foremost exponents of contemporary art in the Canary Islands. Cabrera was a pivotal reference in the relationship between art, nature and landscape. He was awarded, among others, the World Prize for Ecology and Tourism and the Europa Prize. A great story of a pioneer for his time, beautifully narrated by Dr. Chantry.
